First Kindness Assignment

Hello All and welcome to the TEEN VENT Blog!

Assignment #1: Do Something Kind For Yourself

The idea here is to start by going within, doing something consciously kind for yourself. We must first feel good about who we are and what we have to offer before we can give to others. Please note, this is something EXTRA, something you do for yourself BECAUSE of this assignment. After having completed your act, please post in the comments section what you did. Also, consider telling us how it felt doing something kind for yourself. Was it hard or easy? Why?
Additionally, in your postings please tell us a little about yourself. As we get started it is very helpful for us to get a sense of each other.
Some ideas: Take a hot bath. Get a massage. Eat something you normally don’t let yourself eat. Read a book for FUN. Watch your favorite TV show WITHOUT guilt. Spend some extra time with your family, a pet, a friend. Got the idea??

  1. I decided to make myself berry pancakes for breakfast for the assignment. I don't eat gluten, so I don't get to have pastries, baked goods, or any of that good tasting stuff very often. Also, I usually make myself a really quick scrambled eggs in the morning, and not take the time to make something special for myself. It felt good. And tasted really good. Other than the fact that it took up time, I enjoyed making those wonderful gluten free pancakes (so that was easy) and enjoyed eating them even more. (and that was REALLY easy)

  2. I read an absolutely unnecessary book just for fun. I generally read before bed, but it is usually a book that I NEED to read, for class or for some other reason. I re-read From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a fun book that I haven't read in years, just cause it looked interesting. It was fun, and I enjoyed feeling like I had permission to "waste" time.

  3. I made myself (and the rest of my family) dinner. I made some tortas (a very tasty type of Mexican sandwich) and homemade tomatillo salsa. I don't cook dinner too often, so I was a tad nervous at first. It took about three hours to make all together, and I really did enjoy it. It really does make a meal taste better after you spent three hours husking tomatillos, mashing black beans, and cooking chorizo.

The work part of the meal was pretty enjoyable, but obviously the best part was actually eating the food I had prepared. I absolutely loved it, I purposefully made a lot of food, so I got several other meals from the leftovers. I'm planning on making dinner for my family on a regular basis now.

It was kind to myself for a number of reasons:

    It tasted good.
    My family enjoyed it.
    I learned new cooking techniques.
It gave me some time to myself to have a task to accomplish, without any major pressure to succeed. Which, for me, defines why it was kind to myself.

  4. I decided to give myself a "foot rejuvenation". I soaked my feet, painted my toenails, the whole shabang. I also put on some of my favorite music and after that I skimmed through a book that I would normally not let myself read before the readings for my classes were complete.

It was really nice to just kick back for a little while; AND I could classify it as homework!
My feet feel so much better now, and after a hard day of ballet, soaking my feet was just what I needed.
